In 1991, when Communism in Russia had started to collapse, I was visited by the Russian translator of Chesterton, Anna Shakov, of the Moscow Publishing House, and she brought this copy which she inscribed for me, of Father Brown stories in Russian. It has four full-page illustrations, and has been, in several places, annotated by Anna. It was then that I learned of how strong had been the influence of G.K.C. on the people of Russia during the dark years under Communism, and how astonishing had been his early prediction about Soviet bureaucracy.
