'With one exception, the biographical studies which follow were read by the authors at the City Literary Institute during the Lent term 1931. The exception was the extemporary discourse on Mary Stuart by Mr Chesterton, who, declaring that he makes speeches but does not deliver lectures, agreed to read and approve before publication the verbatim transcript included here.'
