Enclosure: [undated newspaper clipping] Nearly onehundred years ago William Makepeace Thackeray, the famous novelist, made these illustration. They formed part of an alphabet which he drew to help a child study reading and writing. The child became Colonel Edward Frederick Chadwick, of the 59th and 33rd Regiments. The alphabet has remained a secret until now, when it is revealed in 'The Thackeray Alphabet' (John Murray, 3s. 6d.), published to-day. (Reproduction by courtesy of John Murray).
