Chesterton's first novel, written in 1894, before any of his now famous writings, lay undiscovered and unpublished for more than a century. Now New City is publishing his fascinating first novel, which Chesterton 'experts' believe to be semi-autobiographical. How was it discovered? After the death of Chesterton's secretary, Dorothy Collins, in 1989, her cottage was being emptied when an old chest, thought to contain only old clothes, fell open. A bit of rummaging revealed dozen upon dozen of old notebooks, school exercise books and loose papers. Amongst the dusty papers was the manuscript of Basil Howe. [index card with notes in blue pen] Basil Howe a story of young love GKC, New City 2001 [notes in pencil] 1st edtn 2001 written late 1893 to early 1894 but not [illegible] until 2001 (had first appeared in The Coll wks of GKC Vol XIV (1996) so the claim on the dust jacket that it was 'previously unpublished' cannot be justified. [folded piece of paper with notes in blue and black ink] notes on text Rear of book [folded photocopied pages, stapled together] Note from Aidan Mackey to New City publishers, invoice from New City publishers for three copies of Basil Howe.
